Thank you for your interest in the KGLT Apprentice Class. The apprentice class is open to students of Montana State University and members of the community. The class teaches what you need to know and do to become a KGLT DJ. Through hands-on training with an experience announcer and instruction by KGLT staff, volunteers learn broadcasting, production, and management skills.
The class meets for nine weeks at 6:30pm on Tuesdays.
It covers operating a radio station, preparing and preforming a music show, adhering to the Rules and Regulations, and using the KGLT”s on-air Computer programs.
KGLT shows are three hours long. As an announcer, you choose all the music to plan on your show. Announcers read Public Service Announcements, play promotional spots, and give the hourly KGLT station identification. You will be responsible for the legal requirements that KGLT must meet and the duties of an announcer. We will teach you how to find music in our libraries: CDs, Vinyl records, and digital files, how to refile the music when your show is over, and how to prepare the studio for the next DJ..
KGLT is a non-commercial, educational, broadcast station. We run an all music format with limited pre-recorded programs, complimenting KGLT’s theme. The Executive staff makes all decisions regarding programming. The On-Air staff is responsible for the music they play during their show. KGLT educates and entertains our listeners with a wide variety of music and programming from around the world and from here at home.
Classe attendance is mandatory as is an apprenticeship with one of our On-Air Staff for at least three hours weekly. Bfore becoming a DJ, you must pass a take-home test and submit an Air Check CD (during Week Six). In the last class, we review the test.
Once you pass, your name is added to the Substitute DJ list. You are then permitted to fill in for other DJs when they need a sub. New DJs generally get non-primetime shows, i.e. graveyards, allowing you to hone your talents and techniques.
The Apprentice class runs three times a year. Contact KGLT for more information and the dates of the next Apprentice Class.
